The holidays are upon us, and the CTA, Metra and Pace are helping the region celebrate through several fun and charitable initiatives. We’ve also included updated service schedules so you can celebrate the holidays through public transit!

CTA

CTA holiday

The Jewel-Osco CTA Holiday Train is a six-car train decked out in lights, holiday prints and comes complete with Santa on a sleigh in the middle of the train, bringing holiday cheer across the city and neighboring communities. On Saturdays, a similarly-decorated Jewel-Osco CTA Elves' Workshop Train also joins in and to help ensure everyone has a chance to enjoy this exciting tradition.

Complementing these two festive trains is the Jewel-Osco CTA Holiday Bus, which brings the same holiday spirit and joy to bus riders as it travels throughout Chicago’s neighborhoods.

Metra

Through December 31, a seasonal schedule will be in effect during weekends for various Metra lines. Metra will also be extending the “Kids Ride Free” program, normally only offered on weekends, to the last two weeks of the year.  That means up to three children aged 11 and under can ride for free with a fare-paying adult from December 16 through January 1. Visit their website to find updated schedules for different routes.

Metra will be hosting the annual Operation North Pole charity event for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families on Saturday, December 9.. The event also marks the official unveiling of this year’s holiday themed train wrap.

Metra Holiday Train

On Thursday, December 14th, Metra will be conducting a “Toys for Tots” drive at all their downtown stations. You can donate a new, unwrapped toy between 6-9 a.m. and 3-6 p.m.
