Chicago’s Talent Plus Transit Could Add up to Amazon HQ2 in Our Region

October 3, 2017

Amazon chicago

In a recent Crain’s article a consulting firm ran a study to find out which city would be the best fit for Amazon’s 2nd headquarters. Chicago ranked 2nd largely due to the depth of our talent pool and access to transportation for commuters. In other words, our public transportation system!  I saw the importance of our region’s talent first hand when I was involved with the group that convinced Boeing to move to Chicago from Seattle. I know our residents make the difference.

We also have something here that’s high on Mr. Bezos’ shopping list: a strong public transportation system.  Our transit network is the second largest in the country by passenger miles traveled and the third largest by ridership. We provide more than two million rides each weekday on our system that spans six counties and covers approximately 3,700 square miles (larger than Rhode Island and Delaware combined).  With the lowest cost per passenger mile, we spend our dollars wisely and efficiently.

We stand ready to provide rides to the 50,000 new employees Amazon can deliver.

In 2016, World Business Chicago tracked a record 350 business expansions and relocations in the Chicago metro area. These projects accounted for more than $2.8 billion in investment and nearly 14,000 new jobs. Major relocations and expansions last year included big names like McDonald’s, Motorola Solutions and Mars Wrigley. Businesses know our region has what they’re looking for in terms of a talented workforce and a system to get them there!

Above all, our region is Amazon’s best choice because of our people.  Our area is home to world class healthcare, world famous universities, museums, theater and some of the most delicious “stops” around.  Whether you call us the Windy City or the City that Works, our transit system will get the job done for Amazon!
