Hands on their hips and ready for work, regional transportation leaders gathered today to talk about work to improve Union Station (and enjoy a light moment.)

What  is the third busiest rail terminal in the U.S.,  sees as many passengers a day as Midway Airport and has several local transportation agencies working together to restore it to its former glory?  If you said Chicago's Union Station, you're right.

I was pleased today to moderate a discussion today about moving this project forward, sponsored by the Women in Transportation's (WTS) Chicago chapter. The three panelists are transportation leaders whose teams are closely involved in this work:  Rina Cutler, Senior Director, Amtrak; Rebekah Scheinfeld, Commissioner, Chicago Department of Transportation; and Don Orseno, Executive Director and CEO of Metra.  The RTA is also a partner in this work.

The group discussed the goals of the Master Development Program Implementation, to realize the vision of a bold, fully integrated mixed-use urban district with a vibrant transportation hub situated at its core.  We talked about challenging issues like project funding and our aspirations for the station that Ms. Cutler referred to as the "City's new living room," in the West Loop.

We'll keep you updated on this important work and I want to thank WTS and these esteemed panelists for making today's event possible.
