RTA Helps Evanston Look at TOD Parking Policies

Future development in the Davis Street Station area may have reduced parking requirements.

Just in case you missed the story in the Chicago Tribune today, the RTA is working with the City of Evanston as they move further along in their transit-oriented development work.

Specifically, the RTA is funding a study to examine parking regulations in areas served by Metra and CTA that will inform new parking regulations for residential buildings. The initial results were released at a recent Transportation and Parking Committee meeting.

This work is funded through our Community Planning program. Through research on parking utilization rates and typical parking requirements in TOD’s, the RTA is assisting the City in determining what changes to its zoning ordinance should be considered to better reflect the actual supply and demand for residential parking in TOD areas, and encourage increased transit use by residents and businesses in these areas. Zoning revisions could be made to all CTA and Metra station areas in Evanston by implementing a city-wide TOD parking policy. The City's goal is to increase the use of transit, balance the supply of parking needs in TOD areas and refine policy that will lead to the elimination of unnecessary parking being constructed in the City. Just one more way the RTA is helping us all Ride On.
